Amazon EC2 64-bit CentOS 5.3 Base Public AMI ‘s

May 31, 2010

I have had a lot of people request me to make a public base CentOS 5.3 64-bit EC2 AMI in all the AWS Regions. I can understand some of you would like to fire up a base instance and then make modifications and snapshot them into your own custom AMI’s. So I finally found some time to build some and here they are! You can find them from the AWS EC2 Management Console under Public AMI’s or via command line methods.

United States:

Virginia – ami-b945acd0
California – ami-498cdd0c

United Kingdom:

Ireland – ami-993d17ed

Asia Pacific:

Singapore – ami-45e29d17

Enjoy!

    Hi Phil,

What if any are the obstacles with releasing a 5.5 64 bit CentOS AMI?

    Thanks much,
    Marc

    Hi Phil,
Thank you for your blogs. Very useful and informative.
How similar is this base public AMI to Amazon’s Linux AMI? Do you know if Linux AMI can be run (after unbundling and modification) on a local box for extensive configuration testing?
    Thanks again

    • Martin,

My Linux AMI might be a little old CentOS 5.3 versus 5.5 however I think they maybe comparable. As for local testing I haven’t tried doing that yet, only in the Amazon Cloud have I done testing. I use it in a large 80+ instance production environment without issues thus far.

    Hi Phil,

Just a point of geographic reference. Ireland isn’t in the United Kingdom, it is (in) a state all of its own in Europe. 😉

Your posts are great, saved me a lot of time building custom AMI’s. Thanks!!!
